Welcome to my blog

The objective of this blog is in relation with my master degree (MPhil in HSE) in which I have to design an e-learning project according to the ADDIE model.
I have dicide to do my project about the anatomy of the eye. I think is a good topic because the medical students struggle to understand the tridimentional structure of the eye ball and the different movements possible in relation with the extra-ocular muscles and their nerve supply. It is important from the clinical point of view that the students predict any lesion of those nerves according with the inabilty to move the eye ball in certain directions.
My next step is to look into the different phases of the ADDIE model, with emphasis in the analysis of my goal and objectives and how to tackle the anotomy using e- learning strategy.

  1. Wow Gisela, that sounds like a really interesting topic! I'm sure that the use of technology would really enhance their learning of the subject. Have you thought about using multimedia, i.e. videos of the eye in an autopsy/anatomy lab environment and maybe just some of students as well?

    Enjoy!

  2. Gisela - can I 'do' your e-learning module when you have completed it? The anatomy of the eye has always left me flummoxed and I think that what you propose to do is amazing. Good luck with your ADDIE journey.

  3. Looks like ADDIE is gaining Mphilhse "status" if it can already be described as a journey! I like it. It is easy(ier than other models) to get one's mind around, and indeed provides a journey of design.

As with my comments on some of the other projects, I can just agree with the comments above that it sounds (looks :) excuse the visual pun) like something very adaptable to e-learning, and also something specific enough to take through all the phases of ADDIE.

Good luck, looking forward (sic) to the final idea or project.

  4. The “ADDIE” model stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. According to the ADDIE framework, the initial Analysis component appears to require the most time and energy. This makes sense considering all other components will follow the plans made from this effort. The time available for the entire project is very short, so I am trying to clearly define goals in order to be realistic.
A quick background:this project will be loosely designed for second year medical students at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha. The students started learning anatomy in the second semester of their first year. The faculty of Health Sciences follows a problem based learning (PBL) approach, where there are no classical lectures; the learning of anatomy is through dissection of cadavers in the lab and discussion during the tutorial sections based on clinical scenarios. The students also organize into group study sessions for periods of self-directed learning.
A recent survey of students and instructors confirmed that the eye is the topic students struggle with most frequently. Anatomy of the eye requires studies which involve not only the structure but also the functions and clinical application of a body area which is extremely complex. Considering this, the survey findings indicated a need to develop some support material in the form of tutorial with a corresponding multimedia tool to facilitate learning
Although the faculty have made available several computers with access to internet in the dissection hall, tutorial rooms and library, but computers are not fully integrated and the students rely mainly in books. This e-learning project will be beneficial for the learners because interactive materials will encourage active learning and better computer technology literacy. It will also encourage instructors to become more adept at incorporating technology into the classroom and better able to take advantage of the most recent advances in teaching methodology.
My next step will be to finalize the learning objective framework. Coming soon!

  5. I have just spoken to a SU colleague about his interactive media project on ophthalmology yesterday! It seems to be a nice part of the body to make e-Learning material of...

Your project has three sides, which will be important to describe and plan for. On the one hand you want to achieve better anatomical knowledge of the eye, on the other hand you want to increase computer literacy and motivate students to use the technology available more. Then you also want to draw in instructors into the wonderful world of e-learning and teaching methodology. Quite a mouthful!

This will play a big role in your design and implementation phase. To finalise your project - maybe focus mostly on the material, and just mention/ briefly discuss your ideas around the learners' and instructors' learning needs.

Sounds interesting and like a worthwhile project. Good luck.

  6. Hi
Thanks very much, I posted again the one from yesterday as a new post and now make more sense...
