Was the time enough?

This week is almost over and so this module. Although rushing in the end… I think I am almost through with the ADDIE model in the process of my project.
Once finishing revising the content for accuracy and completeness, I will do a pilot testing with actual learners to explore how they interact with the material, and to correct any problem found before the implementation.
The implementation will be in 2011 for the MBChB II programme, just after, the evaluation will take place and we will be ready for a new analysis according with the results.
I am afraid I have not done with the ADDIE model……..

Developing the learning object.

I think the development of any e learning material is a complex endeavor that can not be done by only one person. It is necessary a team, committed to work together through the development process, and every one can work in the area of expertise to achieve the pedagogical standards required for the learners and the institution.
During the development phase is where you actually create the planned instructional material with which the students will interact. The developers most ensure that the learning material have been based in the cognitive and constructivist learning theories.
I think the big role is for the Subject Matter Expert who most writes all the content, exercises, activities, sound assessment, feed back Etc and to ensure a pedagogical “match” among the different components of the course. But it is necessary the collaboration of other specialist such as web developer, graphic designer, specialist in multimedia etc.

Finalizing my design

One important step to consider in the design following the ADDIE model is the selection of the course delivery method.

In the case of my project I think the best option will be asynchronous e- learning, facilitated by an instructor. The Materials will include guided tutorial about the eye with graph, animations, learning activities, simulations, and assessment. These will be in HTML pages with flash animation embedded. The students will have flexibility to access the material but the completion of the task will be scheduled in the time table.
I think I am ready to complete in writing my instructional design document to go a head with the development. Using Spanish proverb: “hands in the work”

Reflection on the design

I though the Analysis was the most difficult part according to the ADDIE model, but I have realized that the design is really time consuming if you really want to promote learning.
There are some important aspects I have considered:
1-The Learning outcome already set in the analysis most be translated into course content, resources and approaches to teaching and learning for the students.
2- The learners should be provided with a variety of learning activities that accommodate different learning styles to help them to achieve the leaning outcomes.
3- I need to link my course to the necessary online resources such as public libraries etc.
4- The content most be developed from simple to complex.
5- The learners most be provided with on feedback in order to monitor their learning.
I will be back soon.

Working in the design

I think I am not progressing as fast as I would like, but reading the literature about the best approaches to desing online learning materials has taking me quite some time.
Following the ADDIE model, I already know what is to be learnt, by whom, the goals and objectives, among other things already discuss in my analysis, then is time to move to the next step of how material is to be learned.
This project will be done in the form of tutorial that will run on-line in a Web Browser.
The pedagogical approach will be based on a mix of proven learning theories such as behaviorist, cognitive, and constructivist with a tendency to the last two, based in the setting that is problem based learning.
From the reading, I have learnt that the information most be provided in small shunk (5 and 9 items on the screen) to facilitate efficient processing in the working memory and with a proper sequence in order to facilitate learning.
I will use graphics, text and animations in order to facilitate learning. Anatomy is a subject that needs visual aids to facilitates learning.
I will come back soon.

Back into the analysis

In the analysis phase is also important to consider the technical framework or resources available at the institution as well as administrative issues and the content of the program based on learning outcomes.
The learning outcomes are extremely important because they provide the foundation for the instructional design, development, delivery and assessment of educational event...

Deep in the analysis

The “ADDIE” model stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation.
According to the ADDIE framework, the initial Analysis component appears to require the most time and energy. This makes sense considering all other components will follow the plans made from this effort.
The time available for the entire project is very short, so I am trying to clearly define goals in order to be realistic.
A quick background: this project will be loosely designed for second year medical students at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha. The students started learning anatomy in the second semester of their first year. The faculty of Health Sciences follows a problem based learning (PBL) approach, where there are no classical lectures; the learning of anatomy is through dissection of cadavers in the lab and discussion during the tutorial sections based on clinical scenarios. The students also organize into group study sessions for periods of self-directed learning.
A recent survey of students and instructors confirmed that the eye is the topic students struggle with most frequently. Anatomy of the eye requires studies which involve not only the structure but also the functions and clinical application of a body area which is extremely complex. Considering this, the survey findings indicated a need to develop some support material in the form of tutorial with a corresponding multimedia tool to facilitate learning. Although the faculty have made available several computers with access to internet in the dissection hall, tutorial rooms and library, but computers are not fully integrated and the students rely mainly in books. This e-learning project will be beneficial for the learners because interactive materials will encourage active learning and better computer technology literacy. It will also encourage instructors to become more adept at incorporating technology into the classroom and better able to take advantage of the most recent advances in teaching methodology. My next step will be to finalize the learning objective framework. Coming soon!

Welcome to my blog

The objective of this blog is in relation with my master degree (MPhil in HSE) in which I have to design an e-learning project according to the ADDIE model.
I have dicide to do my project about the anatomy of the eye. I think is a good topic because the medical students struggle to understand the tridimentional structure of the eye ball and the different movements possible in relation with the extra-ocular muscles and their nerve supply. It is important from the clinical point of view that the students predict any lesion of those nerves according with the inabilty to move the eye ball in certain directions.
My next step is to look into the different phases of the ADDIE model, with emphasis in the analysis of my goal and objectives and how to tackle the anotomy using e- learning strategy.
